A reader received the following advice from Aladdin, on installing StuffIt Deluxe 6.5 in OS X:

Question: I am trying to install StuffIt Deluxe 6.5 on OS X (10.1). The installation will not complete. The installer may even hang and require that I force quit it, log out, or restart to get out of it. What can I do to make the installation complete successfully?

Answer:

  1. Open the main (root) level of your OS X Hard Disk (or Partition). Go to the Applications folder > Utilities folder and throw away any StuffIt Expander that may be there.
  2. Empty the Trash. Do not be concerned if not all the items in the Trash will empty.
  3. Now let's find the partially installed StuffIt Deluxe 6.5 folder. You probably attempted to install it in the Applications folder on your OS X Hard Disk. Throw it in the Trash and empty the Trash. Do not be concerned if not all the items in the Trash will empty.
  4. Go to your OS X Hard Disk > Library folder > Application Support folder, and if there is a StuffIt Engine.cfm there, drag it out to your Desktop.
  5. Reinstall StuffIt Deluxe 6.5, make sure you are using the "StuffIt Deluxe 6.5 OS X Install". The installation should complete successfully. The installation includes a new copy of StuffIt Expander. It will be in your StuffIt Deluxe folder in a folder called StuffIt Drag and Drop.
  6. Go to your OS X Hard Disk > Library folder > Application Support folder, and check to see if there is a file called StuffIt Engine.cfm in there. If there is, you can Trash the one that you put on the Desktop. If there is not, that would be very unusual, please put the old one back and contact Technical Support for further instructions.
  7. That's it, you are done!
