Regarding on coverage of the SmartPorts 5.1 updates, a representative from Momentum, Inc. offers this information:
PaperPort When using a Visioneer PaperPort scanner with SmartPorts you are required to toggle the scanner from "on" to "off" within the PaperPort's control panel in order to trigger the SmartPorts automatic switching feature. There is a hot-key shortcut for this by pressing "Command" "Shift" "9". By pressing this hot-key combination you will toggle the scanners on/off state without having to open the PaperPort control panel. You will still hear PaperPort's confirmation chime sound.
Update: Donato Zipeto claims that he avoided this problem by assigning the PaperPort scanner to the Palm Pilot virtual port.

AppleTalk Yes, SmartPorts 5.1 renders AppleTalk "inactive" at shut down, which requires the user to make AppleTalk "active" (either in the AppleTalk control panel or the Chooser) after startup, before you use AppleTalk. This is to deal with a bug in Apple's OT/PPP 1.0.1 software (previously described here at MacFixIt). If AppleTalk is "active" at startup, you will not be able to use the serial port to which AppleTalk is assigned for any non-AppleTalk devices even if you make AppleTalk inactive. However, if AppleTalk is "inactive" at startup, you can successfully make it active.

Global Village conflict Meanwhile, Steve Picou writes: "There is a conflict between Global Village v.90 modems and the PowerPort that the SmartPorts updater does not fix. I'm using a G3 266 desktop. The 'maximum throughput' box disappears when you use the PowerPort. I reinstalled my Global Village software and installed the SmartPort updater and the problem remains." Other connection problems also occur. Update: Most of the problems were solved by reinstalling Open Transport software.
