802.11g's "Extreme" Emergence Adam Engst and Glenn Fleishman have released an update to their Wireless Starter Kit to cover the 802.11g standard. "Technology doesn't wait for engineering groups, though: against some industry experts' better judgment, several companies have started to ship equipment based on chipsets that use a draft version of 802.11g to achieve the higher speed and better indoor signal characteristics." Silicon Valley - Oh, behave A panel of leading technology executives, gathered in San Jose, Calif., Friday for the annual Outlook Conference of the Bay Area Council, a regional business association, to discuss whether or not Silicon Valley will "get its mojo back." "The general consensus was that Silicon Valley would make a comeback some day but that the next several years would be slow going." More.

PC shipments up According to a ZDNN report, Hewlett-Packard regained its position as the world's largest PC maker in the fourth quarter, while the industry overall saw shipments increase in the quarter and in 2002 as a whole. "PC shipments increased by 4 percent worldwide in the fourth quarter compared with the same period last year while shipments for the entire year were up 1.5 percent from the year before, according to research firm IDC." Hacker set loose on the 'net Reuters reports that one of the world's mostfamous computer hackers gets off probation this week and plans to dive back into the Internet, his former playground where breaking-and-entering landed him in jail for five years. "On Tuesday, 39-year-old Kevin Mitnick will log on to the Internet for the first time in eight years, during the live TechTV show 'Screen Savers.'" More.
