Security Update 2006-007 Special Report: Application launch delay
Some users have reported sluggish application launches after applying Security Update 2006-007.
One reader writes: "After installing update, apps take more time to load. The icon bounces 10-12 times instead of 3-4."
Two potential fixes for this issue are as follows:
Update prebinding
- Log in as an administrator
- Open the Terminal (located in Applications/Utilities)
- Type: sudo update_prebinding -root / -force and press Return.
- When prompted for a password, enter your admin password, and press Return again. The process may take a few minutes, and you may see various messages flash by. The process is complete when the Terminal returns to a normal prompt.
- Type exit and press Return.
Reset Launch services There are a number of ways to reset the Launch Services database.
The easiest is to use a utility like LSRefresh. Several general-purpose Mac OS X maintenance utilities, including AppleJack, can perform this function as well.
You can also manually delete the Mac OS X Launch Services caches from the directory: /Library/Caches/. Delete any files that are named as such:
Also, navigate to ~/Library/Preferences and delete the file:
- com.apple.LaunchServices-[...].csstore
- e.g.: com.apple.LaunchServices-015501.csstore
- com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
then restart.
Alternatively, you can use this AppleScript, provided by a member of the MacFixIt forums.
