At the launch of the new Apple iPad line up all Apple would say about the availability of the new iPad mini with Retina display was "later in November." Well the guessing competition is over and November 12 turned out to be 'later' enough.

Late Tuesday afternoon the Apple Store went offline and returned with the new Retina iPad mini up in lights. At time of writing, if you're looking for the 16GB or 32GB Wi-Fi models it will ship in 1-3 business days. If you're looking for the 64GB and up in Wi-Fi or any of the Wi-Fi + 4G models shipping time is listed as 5-10 days.

Most reports have suggested supply will be heavily constrained so these timings may extend as the orders roll in.

There is no word yet on in store availability whether at Apple Stores or other retail partners. We'll check out the Apple Store in Sydney at opening tomorrow to see if the Retina iPad mini appears on shelves.

Prices for the iPad mini with Retina display start at AU$479 for the 16GB model with Wi-Fi only and AU$629 for 16GB with Wi-Fi + 4G. Models are available with up to 128GB storage for AU$799 (Wi-Fi) and AU$949 (Wi-Fi + 4G).

UPDATE: Apple has confirmed availability in Apple stores will initially be only through the online reservation system, not on store shelves. A scan of the various Australian stores suggests that day one there was little or no stock of 4G capable models (all cellular models are marked unavailable) and only up to 64GB models of the Wi-Fi only option.
