Reminder: Old versions of coconotWiFi can cause AirPort problems
Older versions of coconutWiFi -- an application displays you a small aqua-bubble at the top of your screen which indicates whether you're in range of a wireless network or not -- can cause AirPort connections toggle between normal and dismal speeds (as previously reported)
Try quitting the application (by going to its menu item [a small green or red ball] and selecting "quit"), or updating to the latest version in order to eliminate the problem.

"We figured out what was causing the problems with our MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo having Airport network problems ? it was a little piece of shareware called coconutWIFI, which had known issues with 10.4.8. They have an updated version on their website, which fixes the problem."
