RED Scarlet-X cinema camera to take on Canon
At the same time that Canon announced its EOS C300 digital cinema camera, RED decided to partake in a game of one-upmanship, announcing the Scarlet-X.

At the same time that Canon announced its EOS C300 digital cinema camera, RED decided to partake in a game of one-upmanship, announcing the Scarlet-X.
The Scarlet-X has a Super 35 sensor, which is able to take still images at 5K resolution and 4K video at 25fps. It records in Redcode RAW format and, for anyone counting frame rates, can also shoot at 1K at 120fps, which is pretty impressive. This outdoes the Canon C300, which has a 4K sensor but outputs to 1080p.
It will be available for US$9750, which includes the main body and an SSD. The Scarlet also comes with Canon EF and PL mounts (like the C300), but there's a slight premium for the PL version. A fully kitted-out Scarlet including LCD and handles will only cost in the region of US$14,000. We say "only" because those playing along at home will realise that the price is a far cry from the US$20,000 Canon is asking for the C300.
