As promised, RAM Doubler 9 is now available as a free update to RAM Doubler 8.

Install problems? As reported by several readers: if you get a message that says that RAM Doubler "did not load because it had been disabled or moved," reinstall RAM Doubler 8 in your active System Folder and run the Upgrade again. This should work. Also note:

Remember, simply copying the RAM Doubler control panel to a new System Folder will not work. There is an invisible file (Load RAMDblr) that must also be installed at the root level of your System Folder. The Upgrade does this.

Due to a bug in Apple Menu Options, some users updating from version 8.x of RAM Doubler may find that the RAM Doubler Control Panel still reports as "RAM Doubler 8" rather than "RAM Doubler 9." To remedy this, simply move the RAM Doubler control panel out of the Control Panels folder and move it back in.

RAM Doubler 8 vs. 9 In comparing the system requirements for RAM Doubler 9 (as posted on the Connectix web page) with the requirements for RAM Doubler 8 (as listed in the printed manual), David Atkinson found the following changes:

  • Minimum processor: RD8 - '030; RD9 - PPC
  • Minimum OS: RD8 - 7.1.2; RD9 - 8.0
  • Minimum physical RAM: RD8 - 8MB; RD9 - 32MB

Using RAM Doubler 9 Judi Sohn adds: "The maximum physical RAM for RD 9 is the same as it was with RD 8 - 240MB. So those of us with 256MB of RAM who want the benefits of better memory management (file mapping) are stuck with Apple's virtual memory turned on to installed RAM 1MB."

On the plus side, Judi notes: "But RD 9 seems to work very nicely so far on my OS 9 Rev. A iMac. A noticeable overall speed increase (over Apple's VM 1) and much less (or nonexistent) disk grinding when switching between applications."
