QuickTime 7.0.4 (#6): Stalls when exporting H.264 content
Stalls when exporting H.264 content We continue to report on system-wide freezes caused QuickTime 7.0.4 on dual-processor or dual-core PowerPC-based systems -- especially when exporting H.264 content.
MacFixIt reader Brad writes:
"I can confirm that QuickTime 7.0.4 repeatedly deadlocks my PowerMac G4 dual-CPU machine while exporting to H.264, so the issue may not be limited to G5 dual-core systems but possibly more to the generic case of having multiple CPU's/cores. I am about to downgrade to 7.0.3 as per your suggestion."
Another reader, Warren adds:
"I am running Mac OS X 10.4.4 on a dual G5 2.3 GHz power mac with QuickTime 7.0.4, and I am experiencing repeated total system freezes several times a day. Last night the system froze during some scheduled system activity.
"I will try down revving QT to 7.0.1 to see if that stops the freezeups."
As previously reported, in some cases, reverting to QuickTime 7.0.1 using the provided re-installer works to resolve these issues.
Apple briefly removed QuickTime 7.0.4 from its downloads page, later replacing it with an apparently modified release of the same version. It seems that downgrading to QuickTime 7.0.1 then re-installing QuickTime 7.0.4 with the new installer alleviates this and other issues for some readers.
