Problems starting up Some users have reported problems starting up after installing AirPort Extreme Update 2008-001.

MacFixIt reader Jeff Dawson writes:

"I've just installed the Airport update and now my computer won't load up. Just sits there with a grey screen."

In many cases, startup issues after a significant system update can be resolved by simply booting in Safe Mode -- accomplished by holding down the Shift key while your Mac is starting up. A number of maintenance tasks are performed during the safe boot, and you might not need to perform any additional troubleshooting. Try a safe boot, then a normal restart first.

Failing the aforementioned, peruse our tutorial titled "Startup fails (particularly after a system or security update); solving." One of the solutions listed there -- including delete specific caches, rooting out problematic kernel extensions, repairing drive damage, and disconnecting external devices -- might prove successful.

Problems connecting Meanwhile, some users have lost wireless connectivity after the update.

One reader writes:

"I've just updated and restarted to find airport useless!  Now airport just attempts to connect and says that there was an error connecting.  When I click 'ok' the signal level goes up to full and drops immediately."

If you're experiencing a similar issue, your first course of action should be to make sure that your cable/DSL modem or router is using the latest firmware. Go to your device manufacturer's site and seek out an update.

Note that you may need to login to your modem/router's configuration page and reset SSID and security settings in order to invoke the improvements. See this page for general instructions on doing so.

Bluetooth problems -- re-pair If you're experiencing Bluetooth device issues after the AirPort update, try shutting said devices off, then turning them back on and re-pairing.
