PowerBook G4 case warping (#4): Screen defects due to warping?

CNET staff

Continuing our coverage of "warping" issues with Aluminum PowerBook G4 models (mainly 12" and 15" versions) where the heat of operating the PowerBook causes the case to "warp" slightly, it now seems that the case bending may result in some more serious consequences including visually apparent damage to the screen.

MacFixIt reader Lex writes "I believe that PowerBook warping may have caused a problem with 667 MHz Titanium PowerBooks's screen.

"The enclosure became permanently warped -- barely -- along the top edge of the monitor in just one or two places.

"The result:

"A vertical, opaque bar running the length of the screen. When I apply some pressure to the monitor in that area, the problem vastly improves:

"The top of the screen enclosure has 'give' -- ie, it can be squeezed tighter -- at the problem area, but no where else along the top of the screen."

See our previous reports (1, 2, 3) for further details on this issue, as well as some potential fixes that include physically bending the PowerBook back into shape and using larger "feet" to absorb the wobbling effect.
