Potential problems with HP printer driver updates

An assortment of issues related to recent software updates for HP printers:

AIO and processor use Mike Casteel writes: "HP's latest (4.03) drivers for the G85 All-in-one machine are working for my TCP/IP-connected G85, printing/faxing/scanning from my TiBook running 10.1.2, but I have one notable issue: high CPU consumption even when not printing. HP uses a daemon process to control the device, a CFM application named HP All-in-one Communications (see previous reference to this app). Once I have printed anything, this daemon remains in the background consuming about 16% of the CPU until I log out or shut down. It is possible to quit the process via Process Viewer, but you will have to restart it manually the next time you need to print, fax or scan."

AIO and Office quits James Noble found that, since installing HP All-in-One software update 4.0.3, Office v. X applications will 'unexpectedly quit; when switching printers via the option in the Print Dialog box. Switching printers via the Print Center works. Downgrading to the prior version of the HP software eliminated the quits.

PhotoSmart and Classic Ethan Miller writes: "I installed the HP updates for OS X 10.1.2. My HP PhotoSmart 1215 will no longer print from within Classic. The print spool file writes, Print Monitor launches and then reports that the spool file is damaged and will be deleted. The exact same thing now happens even when booted from Mac OS 9.2.2. The driver also now fails to display the 'quality' pane." We have not had any confirmations of this.
