Blue screens, kernel panics and more.

Despite two iterative updates for Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5.1 and 10.5.2), Parental Control issues existent since the initial release continue to plague some users.

For instance, several users have reported that invoking the 'Try to limit access automatically' option for Safari blocks all web access. Some users have reported that entering the following command in the Terminal (located in /Applications/Utilities):

  • sudo mkdir -p /private/var/log/apache2

resolves this issue.

The command creates a directory that may be missing and causing the aforementioned issue.

Other users report repeated kernel panics that occur during fast user switching while Parental Controls are enabled.

Other problems include:

  • Blue screen when waking accounts that have Parental controls enabled
  • Parental controls consuming inordinate amounts of CPU time (up to 99%) -- this problem appears in conjunction with restrictions on which programs an account can use. Turn off this feature to avoid the problem.
