Panther Disk Utility clarification

Panther Disk Utility clarification

CNET staff

We previously reported the inability of some systems to install Mac OS 9 disk drivers when using Mac OS X 10.3's "Disk Utility" application.

We have now confirmed that the Mac OS 9 disk driver installation option is only available on machines capable of booting Mac OS 9. So virtually any Mac released after January 2003 (including G5s) will lack the option.

Perry Clark adds another interesting tidbit: "A drive formatted under Disk Utility in Panther, even on a machine that does not support OS 9 booting, still will function in OS 9, though not as a startup drive."
