Palm issuing reset cards to customers with problematic HotSync

CNET staff

MacFixIt reader Lofty Becker reports that Palm is shipping customers an expansion card with the company's reset program as a measure to alleviate widely reported HotSync problems:

"When I called Palm Technical Support last week, the tech fairly quickly said the problem was a software problem and the Palm had to be reset with a little application that Palm provided on an expansion card. He said they?d mail me the HotSync Reset card, and that I should run that. The card arrived yesterday."

The reset process involves backing up all Palm data to the card, running the 'reset' application (which seems to be, at least in part, designed to run the battery completely down;); Recharging the Palm for at least two hours, and HotSyncing.

Becker writes:

"Basically all seems well, though I did lose some data in the process (maybe my fault, I?m not sure). The loss was relatively minor. One note ? the HotSync went very slowly. Looking around later I saw that the process had reverted the HotSync speed to 58K; resetting it to the highest speed brought it back to normal."
