OS X install CD fails to startup

Something went wrong for a reader trying to upgrade to Mac OS X 10.0.2. After the installation, he could no longer startup from OS X on his Blue & White G3. But that's not why we are posting this item. Here's why: The reader adds: "Fortunately I had used separate partitions and as such was able to restart my computer in OS 9, but - even after wiping out the original X partition and attempting to reboot from the CD - it has proved impossible to reinstall X. If I now try to reboot from the X CD I hear a spin for about 10 minutes, then the disc pops out. What is more, it seems that X has hobbled the disk on which it was installed in some strange way. For instance, no matter how many times I reset my startup disk setting to the OS 9 partition, those settings are overridden somewhere to look for the old OS X partition, which is of course no longer there. I've even tried resetting my Open Firmware settings to no avail."

Note: A MacFixIt Forums thread (OS X install disk will not boot) reports similar failures in booting from the OS X Install CD - and links the problem to having external SCSI devices attached. Another thread (Cant startup from OS X CD) similarly confirms that removing an SCSI card solved the problem. Postings in this thread (cannot boot w/ OS X installation CD) suggest that the problem may be limited to G3 Macs (beige and B&W).

Also see this previous coverage of a similar OS X Install CD failure: a message from the Startup Disk CD that says: "Startup Disk was unable to select the install CD as the startupdisk.(-2)." This too has been mentioned in MacFixIt Forums threads (see this one for example) and may also be limited to G3 Macs.
