Odds and Ends: Apple Discussions problems; Safari/Brother MFC conflict; Power Mac G5 noise rumor; Knowledge Base updates

Apple Discussions problems We've had a number of reports of -- and have ourselves experienced -- problems with Apple's Discussions forums over the past week. Issues include very slow speed, no search function, and in some cases the forum being completely down. A message from an Apple Discussions Administrator, linked from the Discussions front page, notes:

"We are currently experiencing longer than expected access times. We have disabled searching, vote refresh/levelling and email subscriptions for the moment to narrow down the issues. We hope to have all issues addressed soon."

Safari Incompatibility with Brother MFC MacFixIt reader Chris Williams reports that some features of the Web setup interface for the Brother MFC-8210J multi-function center (printer/fax) are not compatible with Safari. Specifically, he has been unable to set up the "fax over LAN" feature. When he contacted Brother's support department, he was told that the Web interface for the unit uses a JavaScript function that is not supported by Safari, and that Internet Explorer should be used instead.

Brother also told Chris that they would be contacting Apple about the issue, but couldn't promise when or if a solution for Safari would be available.

Rumor about Power Mac G5 noise issues MacFixIt has covered, in detail, a number of noise-related issues with the Power Mac G5 over the past few months. According to a story on Think Secret -- admittedly a rumor site -- "an internal Apple service note acknowledges the problem and states that Apple will replace the power supplies of affected machines." We haven't confirmed this policy; however, the symptoms of the problem reported in the story, as well as the proposed solution, do mesh with our coverage.
