"Can't find printer" error on networks Mark Mason writes: "My G4 QuickSilver and PB G4 are both unable to find a new Brother HL-1670N printer - on either a NetGear 10/100 dual-speed hub or a NetGear 10/100 switch - if the printer goes to sleep. The printer fails to wake-from-sleep and the job fails with a 'Can't find Printer' error message. Repeated attempts to send the print job will eventually wake up the printer, but the first attempt always fails. The printer works fine on a crossover cable. Brother Tech Support blamed the hub claiming a timing problem originating with the NetGear products."

Update: Rod Paine writes: "NetGear 10/100Mbps Switches (specifically the FS308 and 508) don't create a problem for< various Apple LaserWriters, HP, IBM, Lexmark and Xante laser printers, all used by our clients on networks supported by NetGear 10/100Mbps Switches. There are no Hubs involved in these client systems."

Floppy disk prevents AppleWorks export When trying to export a file from AppleWorks using a DataViz translator, we get an error message if our Imation SuperDisk drive currently has a floppy disk in it. It does not matter if the disk is the destination for the export or not. If we remove the disk, the export goes fine. Weird.

iPod service strategy We received this report regarding how iPods will be serviced by Apple: "The service strategy for iPod repairs will be Web-based replacement only via the iPod support page. From here, customers will enter their personal information and will be guided through troubleshooting steps. iPod customers who do not have Internet access may call 1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273) for assistance completing Web-based information. Because iPod service is Web-based replacement only, service provider facilitation is not an option and is not covered under the iPod 90-day Limited Hardware Warranty." This has now been confirmed by two other sources.
