Multiple monitors tip: Faster video card should be for startup display

Multiple monitors tip: Faster video card should be for startup display

CNET staff

Richard Radke offers a tip that dramatically increased his performance under Mac OS X 10.2.x: making sure that the display attached to the faster graphics card in your system is set as the startup monitor.

"I am using the ATI Radeon 7000, 6 MB built in video plus a two monitor setup using a Samsung 19 inch and a Envision 17 inch. The 17 inch is used on the 6 MB and the Samsung the Radeon.

"I previously had the startup screen set to the 17 inch Envision which is attached to the much slower 6 MB of built-in VRAM (attached to an older ATI chip set).

"Now I startup as I normally do, and then in the display panel make the second display, the Samsung the startup screen. This more than doubled the processing power. No more 2-5 second delay on pull-down menus, moving windows etc.
