More on faulty iTunes Music Store search results; tips for getting better results

CNET staff

In our on-going coverage of faulty iTunes Music Store results, we have a few more strange examples:

  • Phil A. writes "Try a search under Artist using "King." You'll get BB and Citizen and the Singers. Then try searching for "Carol King." Ah, she does exist!"
  • A search under artist for "Sarah Vaughan " won't find the music in the album Jazz Profile Sarah Vaughan. Try "Sarah Vaughn" without the "a" in the last name and the album appears.
  • A search under all for "Bach" will only bring up a partial list of music by J.S. Bach. For some reason The Double Forte recording of the b Minor Mass appears, but the Shaw and Karajan do not. In another mystery under this title is that Bach is listed as the Artist in the Double Forte recording.
  • The composer/performer Ralph Towner can't be found. But one of his compositions can if you search for R. Towner.

Upon further investigation, it appears that poor naming choices by the record companies that are actually providing these tracks are to blame for the inaccurate search results.

If you are having trouble finding an artist, enter their last name as one search. If no results return, try the first name (or another word in the band/artist's title) separately. Also try abbreviations for first names.
