Moof, Classic and Open/Save dialogs: a follow-up

Several users wrote with follow-up comments on last Friday's item about "Moof" appearing in open and save dialogs. Here are the highlights:

Known issue; limited to remote volumes? A reader writes: "This is a known bug that has been around since OS 9 and only occurs in Navigation Services Open/Save dialogs. It is being looked into. The only reproducible case that I am aware of deals with remote volumes. If your readers have found any new cases, I would advise them to write up a bug report on it at Apple's developer Web site."

Networking related Chris Bailey adds: "I too have seen the 'Moof' name replace network and volume names in some save dialog boxes (It seemed to be cosmetic -- we could always save documents just fine). We used to see it under OS 9.2.2 when accessing Windows NT volumes via Thursby's DAVE 3.1 software. I contacted Thursby in January and was told that it was an Apple issue."

Logging out temporarily clears problem under OS X Ross Willits writes: "I have seen 'Moof' show up quite often when using Photo CDs in Photoshop. If I use the Finder in column view, the 'Images' folder will have no name, and if I click on the icon, the next column will have the same contents as the previous one. It takes ejecting the disk and reinserting it, sometimes multiple times for the error to clear. This usually happens if I use a PhotoCD, eject it and reuse it without logging out or restarting in between. It seems that the problem only shows up after the first use of the disk."
