Microsoft Office, Dantz Retrospect get updates

Probably worth downloading.

Yesterday, Microsoft released update 11.3.9 to its widely used Microsoft Office software. This update reportedly includes a fix for a problem where Word could crash when printing. The previous update, 11.3.8, is apparently required before you can install this one.

Also, version 6.1.138 of Dantz Retrospect was released by EMC Insignia. See also article 8117 at the Dantz Knowledgebase site. According to that article, Build 138 improves autolaunching, matching, connection with networked drives (NAS), and support for StorageTek SL500. It fixes problems with multiple instances of Retrospect being launched and with crashing when connection to a volume is lost during backup. Most important for Leopard users, Dantz states that this version is required for Leopard Intel Macs if a full system restore or duplicate is to be bootable. Other notes:

  • Time Machine backups cannot themselves be backed up with Retrospect (presumably because Retrospect doesn't understand the directory symlinks on which Time Machine's storage format depends).

  • The version of Retrospect is for Mac OS X only.

  • Retrospect will crash backing up ACLs on an Intel machine running Mac OA 10.4.7, .8, or .10 (not .9 or Leopard) unless you turn off the option to back up ACLs.

  • The Documents selector does not understand packages as documents (e.g. the iTunes or iPhoto library in their current formats).
