Mac OS 9 Disk Copy creates smaller allocation blocks than Mac OS X

In some cases, it seems that the Mac OS 9 Disk Copy utility creates images with smaller allocation blocks than those created by the Mac OS X version. MacFixIt reader Mark Bolzan provides a case example of why this can be a problem:

"I keep a 125 MB disk image file on a DiskOnKey. I had to remake it to change the password but the contents wouldn't fit on the new image. Then I remembered that I created the original image in Mac OS 9.

The solution is to boot into Mac OS 9 and create a new image using Disk Copy, then restarty into Mac OS X, convert the new image to a password-enabled disk image via Mac OS X's Disk Copy, then copy the contents from the old image to the new image.
