Almost three months after passing the big 50 million users mark, Instagram has reported that it now has over 80 million users signed up to the service. The timing of the announcement coincided with Facebook's first earnings report, after the social network bought Instagram for US$1 billion, back in April.
Rick Branson, infrastructure engineer at Instagram, tweeted that the service now has over 5.7 million users per employee.
It has been a big year for Instagram. Rapid expansion has been a result not only of the Facebook buy-out, but because the once iPhone exclusive app was also made available for Android.
The Instagram blog shared the news:
We're excited to announce that the Instagram community has grown to over 80 million registered users who have shared nearly 4 billion photos! Since we launched Instagram in October 2010, we've expanded from one platform to two, bringing Instagram to Android users, as well as iOS users. As the community has grown, we've seen people sharing photos from all around the world, from South Korea to Bolivia, and even underwater!
We're humbled by the amazing photos from people's lives we see every day on Instagram, and thank you for being part of this growing community.
