iLife '06 DVD (#5): Using alternate drive for installation issues

We continue to receive notes from readers who have problems with the installation of the iLife '06 suite from its dual-layer DVD.

We previously noted that this problem may actually be an be an issue with .mpkg files in Mac OS X 10.4.4. As such, you may want to try using a utility like Pacifist to force an installation of the software. [One you have downloaded and launched Pacifist, click the "Open Package" button, then locate and open the iLife installation .pkg file. Click the lock and enter your administrator password, then click the "Install" button.]

We also noted a workaround that involves putting the machine on which iLife '06 is to be installed in target disk mode, and a solution that involves copying the contents of the iLife DVD to a hard drive before attempting installation.

We've now received word that using an alternative optical drive -- particularly a newer model with dual-layer burn capabilities -- may result in a successful installation where previous attempts failed.

MacFixIt reader Thomas writes:

"As has been reported by other users, iLife 06 installation ran into a hang-up during installation from my original built-in Philips DVD-drive in my G4 MDD 867.

"But when I started the DVD from my external USB_2 LG-Electronics GSA 2166D double-layer-DVD-burner the installation went just quick and fine."
