iBook extra battery glitch: a follow-up

CNET staff
Regarding the iBook extra battery problem we described yesterday, Bill Drake offers this explanation:

"A number of extra batteries were shipped from the Apple supplier in Taiwan to customers without their white plastic cover. These batteries apparently were intended to serve as replacement batteries for use by technicians at Authorized Apple Service Centers. The tech would remove the white polycarbonate cover from an original, defective battery and attach it to the replacement battery.

Customers who ordered an extra dual USB iBook battery should have received a battery with the white polycarbonate cover attached. The cover-less iBook battery will function in an identical fashion as the original battery that shipped with the iBook; however, the cover-less battery lack the non-skid foot found on the original battery. This may cause the iBook to be slightly unstable when set on a flat surface.

The Apple Computer Assistance Center is aware of the cover-less battery issue, and has instituted a replacement program. Just call 1-800-SOS-APPL for more information."
