Audible offers a free-to-keep download of any audiobook when you sign up for a trial subscription. But be warned: you'll probably end up liking the service!

I've always been a big fan of biographies. Recent favorites include Simon Pegg's "Nerd Do Well" and Rob Lowe's "Stories I Only Tell My Friends." My wife picked out the latter for a car trip, and while I wasn't terribly enthused at the time, it turns out Lowe's autobiography is relentlessly entertaining--especially the audiobook version, which he reads himself.

Needless to say, as a longtime technology writer and enthusiast, I'm keen to read--or hear--the new Steve Jobs biography. But I'm not so keen on spending $16.99 for the e-book. (Note to publisher: ugh.)

Fortunately, there's a way to get the audiobook version absolutely free. Awesome audiobook-download service Audible offers a free audiobook when you sign up for a free 14-day trial of the service. Among the thousands of available picks: "Steve Jobs," by Walter Isaacson.

If you like audiobooks, it's hard to go wrong with an Audible subscription. After the trial ends, you can sign up for a Listener Gold plan at $14.95 per month (or $149.95 annually, which is like getting two months for free). That gets you one credit per month, which is good for one audiobook--and big discounts on others.

To put that in some perspective, the audio CD version of "Steve Jobs" has a list price of $49.95, and sells for around $30 at Amazon. Lowe's book lists for $29.95 and sells for $20, same as with lots of audiobooks. For fans of spoken books, Audible is pretty much an unbeatable deal.

And you can easily listen to your purchases on your Android or iOS device, among others.

This may sound like little more than a sales pitch, but I've always really liked Audible, and the deal they're offering new subscribers is pretty hard to beat. (For what it's worth, you can cancel after the trial and keep the free book, though it'll be hard to live with the guilt.)

Hit the comments and tell me about some of your favorite audiobooks!
