Global Village Fax and HotSync conflict work-arounds

Regarding previous reportsof Global Village software preventing a HotSync of the Palm PDA with the new MacPac software:

Paul Forbat found a (somewhat awkward) work-around (if you use an external modem):

  1. In Hot Sync Manager, choose Setup from the Hot Sync menu. Set Hot Sync to "Disabled" and leave "Enable Hot Sync software at startup" unchecked.
  2. Turn off the modem (or if you have a serial port switching device, select a different device). Then select the Teleport control panel and click on the "Modem Reset" button. This will result in no modem settings being available.
  3. Go back to Hot Sync Manager and set Hot Sync to "Enabled." Then press the sync button on the Palm cradle.
  4. After the Hot Sync is complete, disable Hot Sync, turn the modem back on, and click the "Modem Reset" button again. Everything should be okay for normal modem use.
  5. If you use Global Village to receive faxes, you may also need to disable this feature in Global Village Fax Center (Set-Up menu, choose "Receiving..." and uncheck "Receive Fax").

Dave White found a simpler solution for his PowerBook G3 series and its single Printer/Modem serial port: "The error message generated was that the port was in use (reportedly due to the Global Fax software). The work-around: Set AppleTalk to the IR Talk. Then there are no problems."

Update: Dave Kupiec notes that if you simply use the Printer port instead of the Modem port (assuming your Mac has two serial ports), all GV problems should vanish. [Note: This is especially convenient if you have your printer connected via Ethernet, thereby leaving your Printer port free.]
