The event is being held this weekend, from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 May, at Melbourne's Convention and Exhibition Centre. All of the big camera manufacturers will be there, in force, with stands showing off their latest gear. There's also the opportunity to learn from some of the industry's best photographers, as well as freebies–galore!

Workshops and screenings

Want to get your photography skills up to scratch? Over in the Training Camp, some of Australia's top photographers will share their tips and tricks. Canon is presenting Graham Monro and Abraham Joffe; they will be hosting tutorials on working with video using your digital SLR.

Nikon will host a series of speakers at its stand, including Joe McNally, who will be giving a keynote and running a workshop on working with flash.

The Digital Show will also mark Australia's first chance to see the new Pixar short film, La Luna.

Competitions

Plenty of accessories manufacturers are hosting giveaways and competitions at their stands, including ThinkTank, who will be giving away an AU$400 voucher.

Olympus is holding a "shoot-out", comparing its brand new OM-D interchangeable lens camera with a range of full-frame models. Bring your full-frame SLR with your best prime lens (such as an 85mm or 100mm) to go head-to-head with the OM-D and a Zuiko lens, in a professional studio situation, with lights and a model at your disposal. Shots will be printed out for you to pixel-peep and compare the photos side-by-side.

Discussions and presentations

To coincide with the screening of La Luna, Pixar's editorial manager AJ Riebli will give an insight into the film's production process. Vicki Bell will also be giving a talk about the art and craft of photography. You can catch a number of photographers presenting tips for beginners, as well as more specialised talks covering topics like travel photography.

CNET Australia will also be hosting the following series of panels, in the Digital Show Theatre, on Saturday and Sunday:

  • The rise of mobile photography — Saturday 26 May, 12.30pm
  • Making the shift from amateur to pro photographer — Sunday 27 May, 12pm
  • Lomography, lo-fi and the resurgence of analog photography — Sunday 27 May, 3pm
