Brother printer/scanner driver confusion

CNET staff
John Carr found that the Brother web site lists no Mac driver software for the Brother MFC-9600 (multi-function printer/scanner), simply stating "Color iMac TWAIN Drivers will be available on the Brother Web Site in the near future." For the MFC-8600, a monochrome scanner driver is listed for Mac OS 8.6/9.0. However, according to John, it does not appear to contain any scanner drivers, just printer drivers. Further, another Brother Web page states: "The scanner driver does not support Mac OS version 9." Meanwhile, Gary Fletcher was having problems with hangs when printing to his Brother MFC-8300 (see also this possibly related previous report on the Brother HL-1240/1250 monochrome laser printers). Brother Technical Support told him to download and install the latest Brother scanner driver software (which appears to be a version B that is newer than the one listed on the above Web page for the 8600) as well as the latest 1240/1250 USB driver. This solved the problem for Gary, both on an iBook and a Power Mac G4 running Mac OS 9. [Note: We have tried to sort out this mess as best we can, but we suspect that it may need further refinement. We'll update this item, as needed, if and when more info arrives.]
