Krispy Kreme

Even a pirate can only live on hardtack, saltpork and rum for so long. Fortunately Monday is International Talk Like a Pirate Day, and all treasure maps lead to your local Krispy Kreme donut shop.

"Any swashbuckling guest who talks like a pirate will receive one free Original Glazed doughnut, while fans who dress like a pirate will receive one dozen Original Glazed doughnuts," Krispy Kreme's website promises.

Be warned, though: Krispy Kreme is as serious as a hungry crocodile about the "dressing like" requirement. As the site notes, your costume must include "three pirate items, such as an eye patch and a bandana."

But if you forgot to buckle your swash before leaving home, never fear. For the first time ever, technology will help you get out of the costume conundrum Customers can use the custom Krispy Kreme pirate filter on Snapchat instead of a real costume. Just show the image at the store to receive your free dozen doughnuts.

Although the original glazed doughnuts are free, participating Krispy Kremes will also sell you a pirate-with-an-eyepatch doughnut or a skull-and-crossbones doughnut.

Need something heartier before you set sail? If you've got a Long John Silver's location near your docking point, that chain is also in on the fun. Talk like a pirate there to receive one free piece of fish or chicken. Or dress like a pirate and get a free two-piece fish or chicken basket.
