Most users have reported a problem-free update to Security revision 2005-003 when using our recommended upgrade procedure:
- Make sure your hard drive is in good shape: Boot from the OS X Install CD and run Disk Utility's Repair Disk function (or use a third-party drive utility such as DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro).
- When booted from the volume containing Mac OS X, run Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions function. Install the update.
- After rebooting, again run Repair Disk Permissions.
However, a a few issues have appeared.
Problems with new version of Cyrus in Mac OS X Server MacFixIt reader Ron McElfresh reports that Apple's revision to the Cyrus mail server component of Mac OS X server has caused some IMAP/POP difficulties, including:
- Server Admin can no longer read or list email accounts in the Accounts tab
- APOP no longer works (only with "Clear")
- IMAP no longer works (only with "Clear")
- Server Admin "breaks" custom changes to Postix "main.cf" config file.
Printer sharing David Ourisman reports some printer sharing problems after applying the update:
"I installed the Security Update on my G5 PowerMac. This seems to have broken the ability of my G5 to share a Brother laser printer attached via USB with an iBook on my AppleTalk network."
Palm HotSync A component that seems to break with various Mac OS X updates -- Palm's HotSync mechanism -- is once again hampered by Security Update 2005-003. MacFixIt reader Paul writes:
"I had an immediate problem after using Software Update to install latest security update - Palm Desktop's Hotsync failed. In the end I think the problem was with the Transports. Either they need reinstalling or just turning back on from Hotsync/setup/connection settings. This needs testing as I messed around with a heap of things before getting the transports back running but if others have a problem then look in that area."
