Apple releases AirPort updates, providing WPA support

Apple releases AirPort Extreme 5.3 update Apple's AirPort Extreme Firmware 5.3 update for the AirPort Extreme Base Station provides support for Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) security when used with OS X 10.3, as well as "improvements" to USB printing and wired/wireless connection performance.

Apple releases AirPort 3.3 update Apple's AirPort 3.3 software update for both AirPort and AirPort Extreme software provides support for Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) security (when used with OS X 10.3, provided the AirPort Extreme Base Station or third-party wireless router being used supports WPA).

AirPort faster after update? In an isolated report, MacFixIt reader Bob Meador reports that since installing the AirPort 3.3 software, he has seen increased data transfer speeds:

"I just updated my AirPort to 3.3 (had been running 3.1.1). I noticed my rated 'Max Speed' (via Konfabulator's Compact Airport widget) is up to 5.9 Mbps from about 4.4 Mbps. This is a non-Extreme AirPort setup (802.11b) using an Asante wireless router and the built-in AirPort card in my 800 mHz G3 iBook."
