Apple debuts flash-based MP3 player: The iPod Shuffle

As expected, Apple has introduced a flash-based iPod.

The new model, dubbed iPod Shuffle, is available in two versions: One with a capacity of 512MB (about 120 songs) priced at US$99 and one with a capacity of 1GB (about 240 songs) for US$149.

Like other models, the iPod Shuffle integrates with iTunes and takes advantage of a new feature in iTunes 4.7.1 called "AutoFill" which will automatically build a playlist of music that will fit on the devices.

Unfortunately, the new model only sports USB 2.0 connectivity, meaning users who own Macs with only FireWire and USB 1.1 connectivity will be stuck with relatively slow transfers.

The iPod Shuffle includes a lanyard for neck wearing, and optional accessories include an armband, sport case, and a dock for syncing and charging, as well as an optional USB power adapter that charges iPod shuffle via a regular outlet.

There is also an optional battery pack that holds two AAA batteries and keeps the music playing for up to 20 additional hours over the iPod Shuffle's standard 12-hour battery life.

The iPod Shuffle is shipping immediately, and is available through the Apple Store and other retail outlets.
