Apple has released AirPort Extreme Update 2007-001, an update that the company recommends for all Intel-based Macintosh computers that provides enhanced compatibility with AirPort Extreme Base stations and networks.

We've found that the update modifies a number of AirPort-related components, including the:

  • Internet Connect application (/Applications/Internet Connect)
  • AirPort menubar item (/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/AirPort.menu)
  • 802.11 kernel extension (/System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext)
  • 802.11 framework (/System/Library/Extensions/Apple80211.framework)
  • 802.11 Monitor (/System/Library/SystemConfiguration/Apple80211Monitor.bundle)

In Knowledge Base article #305031, Apple says the update plugs a security hole that could allow a malicious user in the local area to crash an un-patched system:

"An out-of-bounds memory read may occur while handling wireless frames. An attacker in local proximity may be able to trigger a system crash by sending a maliciously-crafted frame to an affected system. This issue affects the Core Duo version of Mac mini, MacBook, and MacBook Pro computers equipped with wireless. Other systems, including the Core 2 Duo versions are not affected. This update addresses the issue by performing additional validation of wireless frames. Credit to LMH for reporting this issue."

We've also received word from reliable sources that this update is intended to resolve a number of unspecified bugs in AirPort connectivity.

The new release is available via Software Update, or as a 6.5 MB standalone download.
