Adobe After Effects 5 not tested with QuickTime 5?

After Effects 5.0 may not work reliably with QuickTime 5, because the final version QT 5 was not available to test against AE 5 prior to its release. Jeff Bernstein writes:

"After using the After Effects 5.0 Production Bundle just fine for the past month, it began to crash with a Type 3 errors when launching. After the usual troubleshooting steps including reinstalling did not work, I contacted Adobe tech support. Their response was that QuickTime 5 was not available for testing during the development of After Effects 5. When I pointed out that it certainly was, the person responded that they do not do development with beta software. I was also told that AE 5 works fine with QuickTime 4.1.2. Incidentally, it appears to me that After Effects 4.x works fine with QT 5."

Update: We have also heard from an AE beta tester, who disputes the original report. He writes: "I and others on the AE5 beta team have been using this combination since both products were in beta, with no problems whatsoever. We all keep in touch, and a ping to the group confirms everyone is using the two products together under heavy production use with no problems. I guess the Adobe tech person was misinformed, or misquoted."

Update: An Adobe employee states: "After Effects 5 and QT 5 work well together and there are no known issues about incompatibility. I have it on both my Mac and Windows systems and have had no problems. It behaves the same as it did with QT 4.12."

Update: Perry Mitchell had this symptom. He writes: "As it happens, I was also chasing a virus, and I ran Disinfectant after being warned by TechTool Pro that I was infected by MBDF. After this, AE5 worked again!"

Update: Jeff Bernstein replies: "I stand by my story. I can assure you that I correctly quoted the Adobe rep. We worked with the beta of AE 5 and QT 5 and all was well too. We tried everything to get AE 5 happy again, including clean installs of both OS 9.1 and AE 5. I'm not attempting to cry wolf either. We've been doing Mac support for 17 years..."
