Several readers have reported problems installing the recently released Adobe Acrobat 5.0:

Unable to install Jim Goldberg writes: "I received my update yesterday and have been unable to install it on my Ti/500 running OS X. The install seems to go fine until the last item and then it fails, returning a corrupted install window. I tried restarting in Mac OS 9.1 with all extensions off and but still no success.

Updating previous versions Donn Thorson found that the on-line registration fails to recognize older serial numbers (his is from version 3.05). He also was unable to get version 5 to install over version 4. on one machine. He writes: "The installation program would not recognize the previous installed Acrobat 4.0 on the hard drive and would either just quit or send< various error messages. It would install fine on an iBook and a G4, if I used the external Que!Fire CDRW drive instead of the internal DVD/CD drive."

Serial number prevents install Frank Lord found that at the final moment during installation, Acrobat 5 was removed from the hard drive. He writes: "Adobe told me it was because the serial number was a not-for-resale, and Adobe is no longer updating those. However, I put an older version of Acrobat on another machine -- with the same serial number -- and it installed perfectly! But not on my machine, no matter what I tried (including copying the CD onto my hard drive and installing with all inits off). Apparently other people are having similar problems, based on postings in the Adobe Acrobat User forum."

Create PDF plugin disabled after update? Peter Trinder writes: "When I had Acrobat 4.0 I used the plug-in called Create Adobe PDF. This was obtained from the Adobe Web site, and when installed created a Desktop Printer called 'Create Adobe PDF' and when I printed to it the spooled file was than passed to Adobe Distiller without any further user intervention. After installing the Acrobat 5.0 upgrade, I found that the Create Adobe PDF printer was still using Distiller 4.0. Deleting Acrobat 4 merely stopped it from working. Adobe UK Tech Support assure me it is supported, but I am unable to get it to work."

Update: A reader has offered a fix for the Create PDF issue. First, the earlier Create Adobe PDF desktop printer needs to be trashed. Then select the Abobe PS driver in the Chooser, attempt to print, and select Create Adobe PDF in the Print dialog box. A new, current Create Adobe PDF desktop printer will be built.
