17" PowerBook Security Port: Design flaw?

CNET staff

http://www.macfixit.com/images/cablesm.jpgWe've been notified of a minor body design problem with the newly shipping 17" PowerBook G4, which disallows the use of security cables such as those manufactured by Kensington. The picture at right depicts the problem:

MacFixIt reader Mark B. writes:

"I received my new 17" PowerBook on Friday and overall it's as good as people have been saying. I did note one moderately serious flaw though: the security cable slot is so close to the power input connector that I can't actually use my Kensington security cable and run off AC power at the same time. Jamming it in is out of the question - the interference with a NoteBook MicroSaver (which has an outer diameter of 7/8") is nearly 1/8". A ComboSaver security cable (with a combination lock instead of a key) is thinner, but according to a Kensington representative, it's still 3/4" in diameter, which would be marginal."
