Xbox One gets first post-launch system update

Microsoft's first update for the next-gen console will address issues with notifications, SmartGlass connectivity and more.

The Xbox One will get its first update since it went on sale, with fixes for notification issues, SmartGlass connectivity and much more.

The update will be available from 12pm AEDT on 11 December, or midday today, but only for people using the Instant On function.

Instant On is the low-powered state that allows owners to use the "Xbox On" voice command via Kinect. When in this state, the Xbox One will automatically check for updates and download them in the background. The console will then power down completely and install the update only when you manually power it back on — according to Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, this install process will take two to five minutes.

However, Australia is one of the territories where the "Xbox On" voice command doesn't work, so it's possible that many Aussie owners may not be using the Instant On state. In this scenario (once again according to Major Nelson), you'll need to download and apply the update, but it won't be available until 9pm AEDT on Thursday, 12 December.

According to Microsoft, the update will apply fixes for the following problems:

  • Addresses SmartGlass issues for some users when coming in and out of connected standby

  • Addresses multiplayer issues for some users when rejoining games

  • Addresses issues with inconsistent notifications for some users

  • Addresses dashboard performance for some users

  • Offers improvements for Xbox One's TV, system-update and content-update services for scaling over time

  • Updated wireless networking driver to improve connectivity issues for some users.

We've asked Microsoft about the file size for the system update, and we'll add that information to the story when it becomes available.

Edited 10.20am AEST, 12 December 2013: Microsoft has confirmed that the update is 330MB in size.
