You can now hatch Pichu, Elekid, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Togepi and Magby from eggs in Niantic's popular mobile game.
Niantic has an early holiday gift for Pokemon Go players -- new Pokemon.
The developer announced Monday that a handful of new critters, including Togepi and Pichu, can now be hatched from eggs in the popular mobile game.
A Niantic YouTube clip said "select other" new Pokemon can also be found in eggs. Those Pokemon, players soon found out, are Magby, Elekid, Cleffa and Igglybuff.
"These are the first of more Pokemon coming to Pokemon Go over the next few months," the developer said in a blog post. All these new Pokemon will be coming from Gold and Silver, the second generation of games in the franchise.
Niantic also introduced a holiday special. From now until December 29, special festive Pikachu, adorned in Santa hats, will be found in the wild.
News that new Pokemon would be coming to the game was first revealed last week, alongside Niantic's partnership with US carrier Sprint that transformed 10,500 of the company's stores into PokeStops and Gyms.
The mobile game was a monster hit upon its July release. It turned augmented-reality gaming, which uses a phone's camera to overlay virtual action on the real world, into a cultural phenomenon. Its popularity has waned since then. It's still No. 10 on the Apple App Store's list of top-grossing apps but has fallen off the top charts for downloads.
