Good Game's Hex and Nichboy return to TV in 'screenPLAY'

After the shock cancellation of ABC's "Good Game," gaming has a place on mainstream TV once more.

When ABC's "Good Game" was canned earlier this year, it felt like there was a great disturbance in the force -- as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and suddenly realised they'd now have only YouTube gaming channels to get their gaming hit.

But now the stars of the show are getting a second life (so to speak) with a new show on Channel Seven called "screenPLAY."

Nichboy (Nich Richardson) and Hex (Stephanie Bendixsen) have risen from the ashes of "Good Game" for "screenPLAY."

The new show will see Stephanie "Hex" Bendixsen and Nich "Nichboy" Richardson back on free-to-air, with a half-hour show featuring news, reviews, livestreams, esports coverage and gameplay. The show will air on 7mate "in the coming weeks" following an online launch on June 19. There will also be a digital version of the show kicking off today with a Facebook livestream.

The cancellation of "Good Game" divided fans and industry insiders, with the ABC saying the move was spurred on by Bendixsen and Richardson's decision to leave the show. The show's production coordinator Peter Burns (who now works on "screenPLAY") described the ABC's decisions as "absurd" and many questioned why the show couldn't continue with new hosts.

Regardless, the axing of a mainstream TV show about gaming left a controller-shaped hole in the weekly TV lineup -- here's hoping "screenPLAY" can fill it.

Watch "screenPLAY" June 19.
