E3 flashback: Highlights from the past 10 years
Preparing for the 2010 edition of E3 gave us a chance to go back through the hundreds of photos we've snapped over the years and pick out a few highlights (and maybe a couple of lowlights).
Having attended the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo trade show since 1999 (back then as an editor at gaming site UGO.com), we've seen trends, consoles, and even entire game companies come and go.
Preparing for the 2010 edition of E3 gave us a chance to go back through the hundreds of photos we've snapped over the years and pick out a few highlights (and maybe a couple of lowlights), which are presented in the slideshow below.
The majority of these pics are from 2002-2005, and include some noteworthy moments in gaming history, including our first look at the Sony PSP, the introduction of the original non-Lite Nintendo DS, and even the short-lived GameBoy Micro.
The single thing that jumped out the most from this trip down memory lane was how similar the upcoming Microsoft Project Natallooks and feels to Sony's original PlayStation Eye Webcam for the PS2 console.
In our historical photo tour you'll also find forgotten games, overwrought displays, and tons of costumed characters from the most notoriously free-spending years of the show.
E3 2010 is shaping up to be something of a return to form after several very lean years(the 2009 editionstarted moving back toward the big, flashy trade show model), but we doubt things will ever rise to levels of excess we saw from roughly 1999-2005.
Got any classic E3 memories to share? We'd love to read them (at least the safe-for-work ones) in the comments section below.
