Stars of the New York International Auto Show

The New York auto show marks the last of the big, new model unveilings until the fall, and this year features some remarkable unveilings, along with a hefty helping of SUVs. Where many recent auto shows focused on electric cars and efficiency, this show reflects the northeast of the U.S., and buyers' preference for SUVs and all-wheel-drive cars.

One notable SUV making its first appearance here is the Range Rover Sport, an urbanized version of the new Range Rover that appeared last year. Land Rover notes that the New York area is its biggest market for the Range Rover Sport, so it is no surprise that the company chose this venue for the launch.

What came as more of a surprise was the V-6 engine option, not available on the standard Range Rover. The base Range Rover Sport also comes in at $20,000 less than its big brother.

Cadillac chose the New York show to unveil its new generation CTS, the model that formed the mainstay of its lineup over the past five years. The 2014 CTS comes out a bit bigger than its predecessor, making it a more likely competitor to its archrival, the BMW 5-series. A new twin-turbo V-6 engine also gives the CTS a big power jump.

This show was short on concepts, letting Subaru make an even bigger splash by showing off the unheralded WRX concept. This car is long-awaited by sports car fans, as Subaru has kept the previous generation WRX even after it updated the Impreza model on which it is based.

However, Subaru revealed no details about the new WRX, but the unveiling of the concept, which showed off a sleek, fastback-style body, looked promising for a future production car.

Subaru also had its first hybrid model to show, the XV Crosstrek Hybrid. The company adds an electric drive system to its XV Crosstrek compact SUV, resulting in a slightly more powerful, slightly more efficient, car.

Both Nissan and Infiniti released hybrid version of their SUVs, giving us the Pathfinder Hybrid and the QX60 Hybrid. These cars use a common platform and drivetrain, with the Infiniti being the luxury model of the pair.

Acura took the wraps off of its new generation MDX, an SUV that reflects much of Acura's new technologies.

Toyota also showed off the new generation of its Highlander model, giving its styling more design cues from its truck line, although keeping the drivetrain largely the same as the previous generation's.
