Exploring a new platform
Automotive News reports on the next generation of the Ford Explorer.
The redesigned 2011 Ford Explorer--snapped after the tarp was blown off--will have a new platform when it is introduced late this year. The next-generation Explorer will share a unibody platform with the 2010 Ford Taurus, meaning front-drive and all-wheel-drive models are planned. Ford canceled its body-on-frame Explorer a few years ago as SUV sales tanked and crossover sales increased. Ford expects to offer a family of six-cylinder and turbocharged four-cylinder engines.
