2010 Volvo S60 T5

It's been a long time coming, but the new Volvo S60 is almost here and it will come packed with plenty of standard (and optional) cutting edge safety gear, as well as a new entertainment and nav system.

In brief

Volvo's long-awaited S60 is almost here. At the 2010 Sydney Motor Show, Volvo announced preliminary pricing and specifications details, with more info to come when the car launches in December.

With a reputation based on safety, it's no surprise to see the S60 range loaded to the gills in that type of kit. In the column labelled standard is City Safety, stability control with roll-over protection and pyrotechnic seatbelt pretensions for all passengers. For an additional AU$4990, drivers can also have pedestrian detection and braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure and fatigue warning systems, and blind spot assistance.

In the cabin, the S60 is the first car to receive Volvo's new entertainment and navigation system, which during our first play is much easier to use than the company's previous systems. It comes with Bluetooth for hands-free and music streaming, USB/iPod and auxiliary connections, and can be had with either a 5- or 7-inch screen.

Three engines will be offered from launch: a 177kW 2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol (rather cheekily dubbed the T5), a 151kW 2.4-litre turbo-diesel five-cylinder (the D5) and a 224kW 3-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol (the T6, of course).

The T5 features a dual-clutch transmission that sends power to the front wheels, while the other models feature all-wheel drive and a six-speed conventional automatic as standard.

Outlook

The S60 will hit Australian showrooms by the middle of December 2010. The initial range includes the AU$51,950 T5, AU$57,950 D5 AWD and AU64,950 T6 AWD. Naturally, all quoted prices include GST, but are exclusive of statutory and dealer charges.
