I've been reviewing hardware and software, devising testing methodology and handed out buying advice for what seems like forever; I'm currently absorbed by computers and gaming hardware, but previously spent many years concentrating on cameras. I've also volunteered with a cat rescue for over 15 years doing adoptions, designing marketing materials, managing volunteers and, of course, photographing cats.

Sony fills a hole in its A-mount lens lineup with a consumer ($299.99) 55-300mm f4.5-5.6 lens. Lenses with 55-200mm or 55-300mm focal lengths have become a popular choice as an addition to the typical 18-55mm kit lens; with the short and long pair you've got most typical shooting situations covered, and at the 55mm end you usually gain an aperture stop with the longer lens. The lens uses Sony's Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) technology and has one extra-low dispersion element.

It's slated to ship in September.
