Hands-on with the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G for Boost Mobile Brian Bennett/CNET

The $369.99 Samsung Galaxy S II 4G for Boost Mobile may not look like a new device, but appearances are often deceiving. That's especially true of this smartphone, which on the surface seems to be identical to Samsung's legendary Galaxy S II from a year ago. The handset here though boasts Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, powered by the same hardware that made the device so groundbreaking in 2011.

At about a third of an inch thick, the phone's razor-sharp chassis conceals a Samsung Exynos 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 16GB of internal memory, and a big 4.52-inch Super AMOLED plus (800x480-pixel) display. It also has the same quality 8-megapixel camera Android users have grown to appreciate. Expected to ship on September 6 and sold by Boost Mobile for $369.99, the updated Samsung Galaxy S II 4G will lean on Sprint's legacy WiMax network for 4G data.

Outlook
After spending some hands-on time with the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G at Boost Mobile and Samsung's launch event, I can say the phone feels relatively quick and responsive but not lightning fast. The screen though has less resolution than the full HD screens found on the new Galaxy S III, its deep contrast and eye-popping colors go a long way toward helping me forget that. The 4G speeds on this Galaxy S II 4G don't seem as fast as Samsung's LTE counterparts, but we'll need to do more testing to confirm that. Check back soon for a full review.
