Home and business users seeking an inexpensive, if basic, ultraportable will be pleased with the well-designed Gateway NX100X.

Gateway's first ultraportable model since 2002, the NX100X/E-100M makes a great first impression with its sleek black case, brushed-aluminum details, and dark blue status lights. The two model names describe essentially the same laptop with a few key differences. The NX100X is aimed at consumers and includes an external DVD burner and a one-year warranty, while the E-100M, aimed at business users, offers an optional Trusted Platform Module and a three-year warranty. Under the hood, all NX100X/E-100M laptops include Ultra Low Volt Intel Core Solo processors; up to 100GB hard drives spinning at 5,400rpm; up to 2GB of 533MHz RAM (with support for fast 667MHz memory); and integrated Intel graphics. Every model also includes a 12.1-inch wide-screen display (the same size as the Dell Latitude X1's), with a sharp 1,280x800 native resolution.
We tested an NX100X with a 1.2GHz ultra-low-voltage Intel Core Solo processor, 512MB of 533MHz RAM, an 80GB hard drive spinning at 5,400rpm, and integrated Intel graphics that borrow up to 128MB of system memory.
