Two Subarus diverged: 2017 Outback, Legacy each gain new trim level

For the 2017 model year, Subaru isn't doing too much to its larger twins, the Legacy sedan and the lifted, crossover-ish Outback. It's adding two new trim levels, one per vehicle, that serve completely different buyers.

The 2017 Outback Touring errs on the side of luxury. Available with either engine (the 175-horsepower four-cylinder, or the 256-hp six-cylinder), this new loadout includes a Java Brown leather interior motif, a dark gray grille, new wheels, chrome cladding and badging and a heated steering wheel.

Over on the 2017 Subaru Legacy, its new Sport trim features that same gray grille, alongside standard fog lights, new wheels, and a special two-tone interior with blue contrast stitching. There's also a bit of carbon fiber trim, because it's a sport model and that's sort of par for the course these days. The Legacy Sport is offered only with the four-cylinder engine.

Both cars receive two new safety systems lumped into the EyeSight suite -- reverse automatic braking and automatic high beams. Both new trim levels feature a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, although the Outback Touring receives standard navigation whereas the Legacy Sport does not. These fraternal twins will arrive at dealerships this summer.
