You probably know the PlayStation logo, because Sony's sold 450 million consoles since the system debuted 25 years ago.

This day 25 years ago -- Dec. 3, 1994 -- Sony's original PlayStation hit stores in Japan and kicked off a seismic shift that now has earned it a Guinness World Record.

"We're thrilled to be certified as the best-selling home video game console brand ever, with over 450 million units sold across the original PlayStation, PS2 , PS3 and PS4 as of Nov. 7, according to @GWR," PlayStation tweeted on Tuesday, with a photo of Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan and former CEO Ken Kutaragi.

Looking at the individual consoles' sales figures up to September, PS2 and PS4 are the top-selling home consoles of all time, with sales of 155 million and 102.8 million consoles, respectively. The original PlayStation is just behind with 102.5 million, while the PS3 sold a comparatively disappointing 87.4 million units.

"Starting from a humble beginning as an upstart within Sony, Ken Kutaragi and team delivered on a vision to elevate video games as a form of entertainment that everyone could enjoy, and to make a platform for game developers to express their creativity," Ryan wrote in a blog post marking PlayStation's 25th anniversary

"The original PlayStation sold 100,000 units in Japan on its first day and went on to become the first-ever home console to surpass 100 million units sold globally."

The PS5 is on the horizon for 2020, but there's still life in the PS4. Upcoming exclusives The Last of Us Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima will keep consoles warm until the next gen arrives.
